Chapter Twelve

The barn was even darker than it had been yesterday, the clouds heavier overhead, and a strong wind was beginning to toss the tree branches about, with their new, young leaves shivering toward the sky. Lanu crossed the yard without falling, and only stopped at the barn door a moment, to hold the ancient wood and stabilize himself. His feet and legs only ached a little. Pleased with himself, he pulled the door wider and went inside.

Colin was with Charger, idly brushing his coat, though it was already shining beautifully. He glanced up as Lanu entered, then slowly set the comb down. He turned to Lanu and showed a momentary surprise—Lanu was already at the horse’s stall, leaning on the boards. “Hey, you wanna sit down?” Colin asked. Lanu shook his head.

“I can stand.” He smiled. “I want to talk.”

A little furrow appeared on Colin’s brow. “Aye, then. What is it?”

It seemed to Lanu, for that moment, that there was a scent—something like fear. Colin didn’t look afraid, and Lanu wasn’t sure he’d detected anything at all a moment later, but that flicker of scent made him set aside any long or cumbersome explanations. Instead, he simply said, “I won’t See for anyone anymore. I only want to have sex with you.”

A wide-eyed blink. “Oh. Uh…really?”

Lanu smiled, voice dropping a little toward a purr. “Your cock is my favorite, Colin…”

At that, Colin suddenly laughed, and Lanu felt the warmth of it spreading all through his chest. “You bastard,” he chuckled. “I guess that’s saying something, though.” He came out of the stall and wrapped his arms around Lanu, who leaned heavily on him. “All right, you asked for it—you got it.”

“I want a kiss,” Lanu murmured. “Then sex.”

“Brat,” Colin hummed—and then kissed him.

As they lingered together, kisses long and deep, suddenly there was a loud cracking and rolling of thunder. Lanu gasped, shivering in Colin’s arms. He’d heard thunder before, but always muted and distant, shut away in the Temple. This—!

He turned in Colin’s arms and looked out at the door. The wind was whipping harder, and bright light flashed—lightning! He’d only ever Seen lightning before! And then thunder again, louder and nearer. Lanu made an inarticulate sound of excitement and pushed away from Colin, moving as fast as his legs would take him to the door. The rising storm was sweeping in, and he could feel the tingle on his skin. His heart pounded, blood chasing through him like the scouring wind through the trees.

From behind him: “Guess we better get inside. …You’re not scared of thunder, I see. Sort of surprising, but I suppose that—”

Turning back to Colin, Lanu reached for him, and Colin stopped dead at the sight of his face. “Colin…” was all Lanu could find in his head to say. His voice rumbled in his throat like the thunder.

“Uh. Your eyes are…”

But that was all Colin said before Lanu grabbed him, pulling hard, and stumbled his way out of the barn. He did not head toward the farmhouse, but away from it.
